Who’s Happier in Age-Gap Relationships? A Look at the Research

Age-gap relationships—where one partner is significantly older than the other—often spark curiosity and debate. Are they fulfilling? Do both partners benefit equally? A recent study led by Samantha Banbury at London Metropolitan University, summarized by Sebastian Ocklenburg, Ph.D., in Psychology Today, offers some insight.

The study surveyed 126 individuals in relationships with at least a seven-year age difference. Participants completed questionnaires on well-being, relationship satisfaction, and dating attitudes. The findings? Older partners—especially men—reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction than their younger counterparts. This trend held true across both heterosexual and homosexual relationships involving older men.

Interestingly, the same pattern wasn’t observed in women. Female participants reported similar satisfaction levels regardless of whether their partner was older or younger, suggesting that age dynamics may influence men’s relationship satisfaction more than women’s.

While the study is relatively small, it adds nuance to our understanding of how age differences shape relational dynamics. For therapists, it’s a reminder that age-gap couples may bring unique expectations, power dynamics, or emotional needs into the therapy room—especially when one partner feels more fulfilled than the other.
