About EveryMan Therapy

Why EveryMan Therapy Exists

EveryMan Therapy was built for men who want something real — a grounded, steady place to understand themselves without judgment or performance. I specialize in psychotherapy for men in Ann Arbor, shaped by a deep, steady approach and the grounded strength of the Everyman archetype.

The Everyman represents the ordinary man navigating extraordinary pressures — identity shifts, emotional disconnection, relationship strain, and the weight of expectations. That's the work I do with men every day.

Therapy for Men Rooted in Depth and Honesty
The values behind EveryMan Therapy are simple and masculine in the best sense of the word:

Authenticity: A space where you don't have to perform or manage impressions.
Groundedness: Therapy that helps you steady yourself, not chase perfection.
Respect: A relational, attuned approach where your story is taken seriously.

Whether you're dealing with anxiety, relationship problems, emotional numbness, compulsive patterns, or questions about who you're becoming, I offer men's therapy in Ann Arbor that meets you where you are and helps you move toward something more honest and grounded.

Masculine Resilience in Practice

Men often carry silent burdens — pressure to stay composed, fear of failure, emotional isolation, or the expectation to "handle it." At EveryMan Therapy, we name those pressures and work through them together.

Common concerns I help men navigate include:

- Men's issues
- Stress, anxiety, and burnout
- Depression and emotional numbness
- Relationship and intimacy struggles
- Compulsive behaviors and coping patterns

My style brings together steady, honest exploration and practical tools when they’re useful — all grounded in your history, your patterns, and how you’ve learned to navigate your inner life.

A Grounded Approach to Men's Inner Lives

The stories of Bilbo Baggins or Harry Potter resonate because they reflect something true: ordinary men facing internal and external challenges that reshape them. Therapy works the same way — not through heroics, but through honesty, courage, and a willingness to look inward.

I use archetypal language sparingly and intentionally, helping men reconnect with their own strength, direction, and sense of self.

Our Logo

logo with anchor and roots

Our anchor-and-roots logo reflects the core of this work.
The anchor represents steadiness, emotional grounding, and the courage to explore depth.

The roots symbolize growth, self-understanding, and the quiet strength that develops through honest reflection.

This mirrors the heart of depth-oriented psychotherapy for men — grounded, steady, and committed to long-term change.

Meet Your Therapist

I'm Brian Hayes, a Limited License Psychologist based in Ann Arbor. I've been practicing psychotherapy since 2009, shaped by a wide range of personal and professional experiences.

Before founding EveryMan Therapy, I worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Ann Arbor. I'm also a combat veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during the Persian Gulf War aboard the USS Worden — an experience that continues to inform my understanding of resilience, identity, and the quiet burdens men carry.

I hold degrees in social psychology and counseling psychology from Western Michigan University. Over time, I've come to specialize in men's mental health, working with men who feel stuck, shut down, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves and the people they care about.

Whether you're navigating emotional shutdown, relational strain, compulsive patterns, or a role that no longer fits, I help men make sense of what hurts — and move toward something more authentic.

About My Training and Clinical Perspective

As a Limited License Psychologist, my training is grounded in psychological science — how emotional life develops, how patterns form, and how they shift in the context of a thoughtful therapeutic relationship.

My work is informed by psychodynamic principles, which means I pay attention to:

- the meanings beneath symptoms
- early experiences that shape adult patterns
- unconscious dynamics
- relational patterns that repeat themselves
- the emotional logic behind your struggles

In Michigan, licensed psychologists, limited licensed psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and clinical social workers each bring something important to the mental health landscape. My background means I approach therapy with a particular focus: understanding not just what you're struggling with, but why it makes sense in the context of your history, relationships, and internal world.

This perspective shapes the way I listen, the questions I ask, and the kind of change I help men work toward.
